How it works

1

Create a free account

Sign up with your email. No credit card, no commitment. Your account tracks every lesson you complete.

2

Work through the modules

Five modules, built to progress from "what is AI" to shipping your own AI product. Each lesson ends with a short check to mark it complete.

3

Earn your certificate

Complete all modules and your final capstone - SPUR issues a signed certificate in your name, verifiable by employers.

Curriculum

Five modules. Starts from absolute zero - no prior ML, math, or coding needed to begin. Every lesson ends with a practical exercise.

Module 1 - What Is AI? (The Basics)

  • What "AI" actually means - separating hype from reality
  • The 60-second history: from rule-based systems to modern neural networks
  • What an LLM does under the hood, explained without math
  • The vocabulary: model, prompt, token, context, training, inference
  • Hands-on: have your first real conversation with an AI, critically

Module 2 - Using AI Effectively

  • How to prompt well: patterns that consistently produce good output
  • What AI is good at, and where it reliably fails
  • Text, code, and image generation in practice
  • Your first Python script: calling an AI from code (we'll teach the Python you need)
  • Hands-on: build a small tool that solves a real problem for you

Module 3 - Building With AI

  • Giving AI access to your documents (retrieval, explained simply)
  • Agents: AI that takes actions, not just answers questions
  • Structured outputs and reliable tool use
  • Choosing the right model for the right job
  • Hands-on: build a document Q&A assistant using your own files

Module 4 - Making It Yours (Intermediate)

  • Fine-tuning: teaching a model your specific task
  • LoRA in plain language - running on real SPUR GPUs (4090 & 5090 fleet)
  • Small models vs big models: when 7B beats GPT-4
  • Evaluating AI output - tests that don't lie
  • Hands-on: fine-tune an open-weight model and measure the lift

Module 5 - Shipping Your AI Project (Capstone)

  • Deploying a model so others can use it
  • Cost, latency, and reliability - the stuff courses usually skip
  • AI sovereignty and compliance in Canada (PIPEDA, AIDA, data residency)
  • Observability: knowing when your AI is failing silently
  • Capstone: ship a working AI project on SPUR sovereign compute - your certificate unlocks when this is submitted and approved

What makes this course different

1

Actually free

Not "free trial." Not "free for the first module." Free, period - including the GPU time you'll use for fine-tuning and deployment in the later modules.

2

Starts from zero

Module 1 assumes you know nothing about AI. Module 2 teaches the Python you need. By Module 3 you're shipping real things.

3

Real GPUs, not Colab

When you reach fine-tuning, your lessons run on the SPUR 4090/5090 fleet - the same hardware SPUR uses in production. No free-tier timeouts.

4

Canadian sovereignty

Everything you build runs on Canadian-hosted compute. No US cloud dependency, no data residency surprises.

Format & commitment

  • Cost: Free. No paywall, no upsell, no payment details required.
  • Pace: Self-paced - start anytime, progress at your own speed.
  • Time estimate: Most learners finish in 6–10 weeks at ~3–5 hours/week. Your account tracks progress across devices.
  • Prerequisites: None for Modules 1–2. Python basics are taught in Module 2. By Module 4 you'll be fine-tuning real models.
  • Compute: GPU allocation on the SPUR 4090/5090 fleet is included free when you reach the hands-on modules.
  • Certificate: Issued once you complete all five modules and submit an approved capstone project.

FAQ

Is it really free?

Yes. No credit card required to sign up. GPU time for the hands-on modules is also covered by SPUR at no cost to you. If that changes for any future premium track, the current course stays free forever.

Do I need prior experience?

No. Module 1 starts from "what does AI even mean." We teach the Python you need in Module 2. If you've never written code, you can still complete Modules 1–3; Modules 4–5 are more technical.

How is my progress tracked?

Create a free account and sign in. Every lesson you complete is saved to your account, so you can pick up where you left off on any device.

How does the certificate work?

When you've completed every lesson across all five modules and submitted an approved capstone project, SPUR issues a signed PDF certificate in your name with a unique verification ID. Employers can verify it directly on spuric.com.

What's the catch? Why is SPUR giving this away?

SPUR's mission is to build Canada's frontier-tech talent base. A free course helps us find the most motivated builders - some of whom become Venture Studio applicants, Compute customers, or SPUR hires.

Can I share the course material?

You can point anyone to this page. Certificates are non-transferable - each one is tied to the individual learner's account.

When does it start?
